Basically, the camp we went to was a 7 hour drive (killer) north of the Gong. The area is Crescent Head, and when we walked out to the beach at 6:30am Saturday morning (just us and another couple - Liz and Joe), you just look up the beach for literally 2-3 miles... and there was nothing but beach. No cottages, no homes, no people or docks or any signs of life. It was breathtaking.
As you can see, Grant was a natural. I'm definitely way less graceful, but the point is we both got up within our first two or three tries! The staff (4 guys under age 35) were super helpful, giving us a push start a few times to help us stay ahead of the white part of the wave. But at the end of the day, man were our arms sore from pushing up onto the board! Surfing is a very good work out!
Best of all - no sunburn! It's true, you might think (as I did) that 7 hours in the water on Saturday might be trouble, but a lot of SPF 30, actually does go a long way!
So now that we've conquered surfing, the next post will fill you in on the OTHER stuff we did at camp ...
